The latest survey of around 1700 people who have experienced one night stand, published in the journal, ‘Human Nature’, revealed that women are left unhappy and have negative feelings after fleeting sexual encounters.
Women like to get on a one night stand only if it culminates into a long-term relationship or else the women are left to feel ashamed and used. On the other hand men were reported to be more satisfied, content and confident after this meaningless relationship.
According to the survey, eighty per cent of men had overall positive feelings about the experience.
The academic leading the research said that there was no evolutionary advantage for women in one night stands. The study concluded women "have not adapted" to meaningless sex because it did not suit them at this stage in evolution.
As per the study, men are more likely to reproduce and benefit from numerous short-term partners, while, for women, quality seems to be more important than quantity.
According to biologists, finding partners of high genetic quality is a stronger motivator than sheer number, for women.
But Prof Campbell concluded that “in evolutionary terms women bear the brunt of parental care and it has been generally thought that it was to their advantage to choose their mate carefully and remain faithful to make sure that their mate had no reason to believe he was raising another man's child.”
