Trouble for Jayalalithaa?

AIADMK Chief Jayalalithaa found herself in a spot of bother, with her counsel and close confidante N Jothi quitting her party to join rivals the DMK. The former Chief Minister is worried that the DMK would get confidential information out of her close confidante on her cases.

Jayalalithaa has weathered many a political storm, however, the latest crisis may be a cause of worry for the AIADMK supremo. Especially as this time N Jothi, who has joined the opposition, was the keeper of many of her secrets. Advocate N Jothi represented Jayalalithaa and the AIADMK in more than one hundred cases. He was seen as Jaya's point person in Delhi, as a Rajya Sabha MP and her voice in the Parliament.

However, this relationship turned sour after she did not re-nominate him to the Rajya Sabha. When Jothi refused to fall in line, 'Amma' issued a stern note to cadres. Jayalalithaa said, "Do not have any dealing with Jothi. He is unethical."

On Friday (March 21) Jothi joined the DMK in full media glare. He claimed that despite the political somersault, as a professional lawyer, all of Jaya's legal secrets will be safe with him. He said, "I will not appear as a prosecution in those cases. I should not do it, the government will take care of it. I'll not even remain in the vicinity of the courtroom."

However, for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK Chief Karunanidhi, Jothi is a prized catch. For the past 12 years, this advocate has handled all the 113 cases of Jayalalthia, including those pertaining to disproportionate assets and income tax. Karunanidhi said, "Jothi has been sent to lighten up Tamil Nadu which according to some people is immersed in darkness."

DMK insiders said that its only matter of time before Jothi spills the beans and in a state infamous for personal vendetta, the new recruit may soon become a pawn.
