Jaya, Karuna in Kamal Haasan movie

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi and AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa may never share a dais in real life, but actor Kamal Haasan appears to have made it happen in the reel.

In his new film, Dasavatharam , in which the actor plays ten characters, is a scene showing the two political rivals together, albeit with generous help from computer graphics.

According to sources, Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa appear on the screen when US president George W Bush (played by Kamal) confers an award on an Indian scientist, played, of course, by Kamal.

The Dasavatharam team pulled off the coup largely because of Kamal's proximity to Karunanidhi. Insiders say Karunanidhi was filmed at his residence in blue-matt format, where he is shot against a blue background which could be later transformed into the required scene with the help of computer graphics.

For good measure, an 85-year-old actor, dressed up to resemble Karunanidhi, replicated the scene, as a fall back option to the blue matt. As Jayalalithaa was not available for a blue-matt shoot, the crew used file shots of the AIADMK leader visiting tsunami-hit areas in a helicopter to be added to the Karunanidhi scene, with her permission. Both Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa trace their political roots to the Tamil film industry.
